Publishing Articles

Page history last edited by kevinchampion 9 mos ago

On the Dashboard, there is a widget entitled "Articles in this issue." This widget displays all articles that are in Pending Review and that have the category "this issue." All articles that have been edited and are waiting to go out in the present week's issue should be categorized with "this issue" and have a status of "Pending Review." Articles without the cateogory "this issue" will not show up in the widget and will not be published with the other articles.

Once approval has been received to publish the issue, go to Posts > Issues. This will take you to the Issue Manager plugin where you will see a listing of categories along with columns listing three statuses: Published, Unpublished, and Ignored. The Issue Manager plugin allows you to do bulk actions for all articles in an individual category. So, you can bulk publish, unpublish, or ignore the given category. In order to publish the current week's issue, click "Publish" for the "this issue" row. [Warning... do not publish any other categories as it will cause severe, perhaps irreparable, damage to the archives.]

Clicking "Publish" will take you to another page where you will see all of the articles in Pending Review and with the category "this issue." Here you can click and drag articles to create the desired publishing order. You can also modify the timestamp that the articles will be published with (in the system they are actually published with a timestamp several seconds apart, even though it will look like they were published at the same time). Once complete, click "Publish Issue."

Check the site homepage to see if everything published correctly. Remember, due to the structure driving the homepage, if you are trying to publish on a day other than Tuesday, the articles will be held until Tuesday at which point they will display on the homepage (they will still be published and will appear in the RSS feed, but will not appear on the homepage). If you need to make alterations to the order of the lineup after publishing, return to Posts > Issues and click "Unpublish" for "this issue." This will unpublish those articles at which point you can click "Publish" and redo the lineup. This is also the way you could alter the lineup by adding or removing a post.

Once everything is publishd and in working order, go to Posts > Edit. Using the "Quick Edit" links under each article, go through one-by-one and remove the "this issue" category from each article that was just published. This will remove that categorization from the website and reset the widgets for the next week's issue.

Once all the "this issue" category attributions are removed, go back to Posts > Issues and change the "this issue" status from "Publish" to "Ignore" by clicking "Ignore." Without changing this, as soon as an article for next week's issue is in "Pending Review" and categorized in "this issue" it will be published because the Issue Manager status for "this issue" will still be "Publish."

Once complete, the issue is ready to be sent to the listserv via the memo.
